| Before we jump into registering
domains let's talk about the difference between a Registrar
and the Registry. The Registrar is the company
you actually register the domain names with for example Godaddy
is a well known registrar. They are middle men with the
registry which is handled by Verisign for .com and .net domain
extensions. You cannot register domain names directly with
Verisign instead you register your domains with a registrar.
Who then registers the domains with the Registry (Verisign).
Now we have that cleared up let's talk about registering domain
names. You've decided on registering a few domain names.
You already did your research and know the domain names you want
so it's time to buy a few. When you are first starting out
just purchase a handful and as you get more experience expand
your domain name portfolio. Before you make your first
purchase you want to make sure that you find the best registrar
to buy domain names from. There are hundreds of different
places you can register domain names from. So doing your
research early will really pay off in the long run. It's a
pain to have some domains on one registrar and other domains on
10 other registrars. You want to try and keep your domain
names on the same registrar if for nothing else to keep your
administration easy. Some of things to look for in a
registrar are security, reputation, price, domain extensions
offered and service, but there is more to it so check out the
Selecting a Registrar page.
