Parking Domains - Domain Names to Park
How to Choose a Good Domain Name for Domain Parking

In order to Park a domain you need a solid domain name.  Unfortunately that's not all, you also need a domain name that people are willing to pay decent money to advertise for.  You could have a perfect name, but if no one is advertising on those keywords it's useless for parking, of course you could sell it. For example some of the highest pay per click categories are investing, mortgages, specific lawyers, etc.  In order to know whether a name or a names keywords pays well you can try out the tools listed in the Resource Section and read up on PPC Bids.

So you have researched how much people are willing to pay for keywords for your domain it's now time to look at the different types of domains you can park.  Remember Parking a domain requires traffic to that name it shouldn't be a branded or made up word.  Even though hootieholiday.com might sound good no one will ever type it in.  There are different type's of "type in" domains:  "natural", Typo's, or Expired domains.  Here's a summary of each for further information I suggest going to sub pages of each by clicking on the links.

Natural Type In (Direct navigation) - these are generic names people type into the address bar instead of searching for.  For example atlanticcity.com instead of searching for Atlantic City.

Typo's - these are typo's for example someone type' in atlnaticcity.com (interest of disclosure this is also my domain) instead of atlanticcity.com

Expired Domains - some expired domains still have traffic to them from links, people who are use to going to the site, etc.  These sites have a short shelf life if they are parked, but can sometimes be worth it.

you purchased several names with the idea of parking them and letting the money roll in, well hopefully.  Please remember that this group of names has been sifted through for the past decade with more and more scrutiny. There are still great names out there you just have to be creative without going overboard.  For example look at new technologies coming out you are almost on a level playing field with the domain experts in new industries, yes there experience gives them the edge overall, but..  If you've worked in the travel industry and heard about this new product was going to change the industry like an airline that would refund your ticket automatically if they overbooked.  You would know to register overbookedrefund.com, etc.

In any case parked means no development so the name has to make sense.  People have to naturally go there.  don't try and make up creative, brand names for parking it just doesn't work.  Take a look at this recent example what would be worth more lastminuteairfares.com or lastmomentairfares.com.  Which would you type in?

Some of the most successful people in the domain business concentrate on building a portfolio of domains that generate a steady stream of income for them. They rarely sell their names unless someone comes up with an offer they can't refuse. The domains they go after are called "traffic" domains, which simply means they attract a steady flow of visitors and that "traffic" can be converted to cash.

Most domains do not have a built-in flow of traffic. Most that do are generic words or terms (describing a product or service) in the .com extension. Those are called "type-in" domains. If someone is interested in shoes for example, they might type shoes.com into the address bar rather than use a search engine to find information on shoes. This is known as "direct navigation".

High traffic type-in domains are worth their weight in gold, so unless you are entering the business with a big bank account already in place, you have little hope of obtaining these kinds of domains. They are in very high demand and the competition for them is fierce.

1) lock away the credit card and invest time in research - running before you can walk will cost you money. Our domainer glossary should help you get to grips with most common aspects of this business:

2) remember that if you're adopting the parking model, as so many want to in response to recent articles, that you are looking for domains that already have traffic. The park companies aren't there to add traffic to your domains, they're there to monetize the traffic your domains already have.

3) once you're confident the domain(s) you wish to register/buy have good odds of getting traffic, you need to register them with a registrar or to set up an account with a registrar and have the name transferred to it if buying an existing registration.

4) you will then need to sign up with a park service, initially that will likely be someone like sedo due to the lack of entry requirements in terms of traffic/domain volume.

5) When you sign up, the park service will give you the details of how to link your domain to their service. This will be done via either changing nameservers on the domain at the registrar to those supplied by the park company or, if your registrar supports it, setting up a redirect. This is where people who type in your domain get sent to the park companies offering.

If you get the choice of redirect, then a stealth/frames redirect means that it will retain the original typed url in the address bar vs showing the new url which would be within the park companies domain service.

6) parking is a whole content service - you send them the eyeballs and they provide the entire content that those eyeballs then see. You are paid a share of what the park company receives from the underlying search engine when visitors you send click through to advertisers websites to further their interest.

7) if you want to increase your revenue then you can either look at improving the revenue from the traffic you have by choosing better targetted keywords within the park companies optimisation section (if offered) or you can look at adding more names that have traffic. Looking for ways to send extra traffic to the names you already have will likely get your account cancelled without payment.

Rinse and repeat until desired income level is reached.

Once your traffic levels start to increase its worth looking around at all the other options that may open up to you including other park services like domainsponsor and fabulous.

Checking out the page is not click fraud, only clicking the ad is.

To your second question.

They can have diffferent preferences, many such as parked.com are designed to try and optimise search engine position - you can create title, keywords and some text, on trafficz.com you can really go to town and add loads of text.

So clearly these ones dont mind you going for the engines. But some do really just want the type-ins, just check the FAQ of the one you are signing up with.

Bodis:

1/ I expect them to have 'traffic issues' a few months down the line

2/ Funny how the owner of that forum personally gave his seal of approval of Bodis to all members by sending a PM to all...
inquiring minds want to know what was the quid pro quo

3/ Must be dang easy to get a feed from Ask/Yahoo on the basis of nothing more than the promise of traffic - no track record, nothing...

4/ As for the lifetime 100% revshare - hard to believe they will keep to it - given that by now most (90%+) of the customers
by number who will likely ever join are entitled to the lifetime offer
I would hate to see the caliber of domains ("available yesterday" type) from random drib drab joiners 2 yrs down the line
On that basis it would have been better to use Bodis.org - since its not-for-profit..

5/ How does it make money?
So it makes money from the few customers that join after the 100% revshare deadline when there is a rev split...?

5/ BEWARE
Does NOT have SSL secure control panel

- password/payment/account details open to sniffers to exploit...shows the importance it places on confidential/valuable customer details..or maybe they are just trying to save a few $$$

Parked.com have a very interesting feature whereby you can globally turn off the ask.com feed on non-yahoo served areas. You are then redirected to a page of your (i.e. domainer choice.)

Thought this was of note.

uses yahoo feed

I think you're on to something there fatter! (If I understand what happened) :

1. Register two good quality keyword domains, one hyphenated and one not.

2. Get a decent enduser to buy the hyphenated version, or give it to them free.

3. Sit back and watch the 'good' version bloom and boom.

I think this is a bit too 'no-good' for me. Forget I even mentioned it.
