Choosing Domain Names > Names to Resell
So you your parking a few domains but instead of waiting for the monthly money come in you need some more cash for say rent, your thousands of girlfriends or maybe just so you can grow your domain business.  So you decide to enter the fantastic world of reselling domain names.  The concept is fairly basic you are betting that you can find solid domain names and register them and then resell them to other domainers because the names are that good.  To be honest a large percentage of the current domaining sales are reselling sales with a few high profile end user sales and a lot of low profile, low dollar end user sales.

What to Look For When Reselling Domain Names

There are several areas to watch out for when reselling domains, first it has to be a solid domain name.  You are selling to people who may have been in the business for almost 20 years okay probably only 15 years but in dog years that's 105 years and domaining is a dog eat dog world (ouch that was bad).  So you may get lucky and find someone who just started that will buy a worthless domain, but the reality is it won't happen often as most people knew to domaining are timid to buy domains from forums and even the main sites like Sedo.com, Moniker.com, Afternic.com, etc..

The second area to keep in mind for domain name reselling is that your domain will sell at a discount compared to selling to an end user.  Usually at least a 20%-30% discount and that's with a solid, generic name.  If your talking about so called brandable names (names that sound good but would need money spent to "brand" the name) the discount could be as much as 80%.  Of course the more statistics of views, click thru's, and income levels you provide for the domain the better the price you should receive.  That's assuming that it has any of those, but we'll talk more about that in the Selling Domains section.

The last area is the amount of time your willing to spend on reselling the domain.  Usually reselling is a lot quicker than end user selling.  All you have to do is post the domain on an auction site, in domain forums, or e-mail other sites that are similar to yours.  Of course you are trading money for time.

Advice on How to Make Money Reselling Domains

In order to thrive in reselling we highly recommend you do as much networking as possible.  Your goal should be to put together a list of people who would be interested in possibly buying your domains.  You can do this by engaging in any of the great domain forums, we love DomainState.com, but also check out NamePros.com and DNForum.com for more check out the resource section. Another method is to keep track of the wanted sections on forums and find out who is looking for what type of domains so that when you register some gems in that area you know who to go to.  Here's an example of a Wanted section at DomainState.com's forum.

Another area to network is at all the conferences and live auctions that are growing more each year.  Meeting someone face to face can really speed up the networking process considerably.  Check out the Resources section for a list of upcoming conferences and live auctions.

So I don't repeat information I suggest you read through the Good Domain Name and Type In Traffic sections for how to choose good domain names.
