Choosing Domain Names > Develop and Sell Domains
So you're looking for a domain name that you can spend sometime to develop into a decent site that will earn you revenue while "your sleeping".  Or maybe you just like the subject and want to develop the domain for fun.  The first step is deciding if you want to have fun with the domain or make a business of it.  If you looking for fun you can register any name you want - retytye.com I doubt will get much traffic until you develop it.  Of course if you actually want people at your site to talk to you may need something better.

Why Develop Domains?

Before we go further why would you develop a domain vs. just parking the domain and letting the money roll in.  Well first the money is usually a smaller amount say $7 a month unless you have a really solid name.  I mean that's not bad you're paying for the domain in 1 month.  However if you develop it and put up some web pages with content, some being over 50 probably you might be able o make $150 a month.  Of course this takes time, patience and most importantly a willingness to learn for more information check out the Developing Domain section.

Choosing Domain Names to Develop

For the most part all the same rules apply from Good Domain Names and the steps provided in the Type-In section.  You are looking for good solid domain names the only advantage to developing is you can go further a field than for domains your parking or re-selling.  For example let's say we decide to get into the niche of "mortgages" because they pay pretty well and I happen to have an affiliate program that works well in that niche.  We also recommend that you develop multiple domains in a niche.  This allows you to share content and resources with the other domains your developing.  Just make sure to change the content a bit so that Google does not believe its duplicate content.

If we do some searches for domains in mortgages industry it's fairly picked over so your probably going to have to register a 3 word or vague 2 word domain.  So we look for something a little different like secondmortgageloaner.com.  Not a great name but a little "brandable" with some solid key words - 7824 OVT.  I doubt that you will get any type-in traffic, but who knows.  On the other hand if you develop the site with some good content and optimize the site for the search engines it could do okay.  The point being if your willing to develop you can make due with just okay domain names instead of stellar domains.  There are some challenges to this though.

First will people remember the name to come back to your site or be able to tell other people about it assuming you want repeat traffic, which you should if your developing.  This is the balance of being "search engine friendly" vs. "human friendly" domain names we want the "and".  Both good for search engines and memorable enough to come back to.  So retytye.com wouldn't work to well.  Second if you decide to partner with other web sites, companies, etc. it helps to have a legitimate name not something that doesn't make any sense.

Developed Expired Domains

On the other side of things you can develop expired or previously developed sites.  In this case the name is not as important as the amount, type and quality of traffic to the domain name.  For example if someone had developed smithsmortgages.com and over time traffic grew and users bookmarked the site, and it hand links with other sites maybe smithtitles.com.  Just make sure you use all the tools to find out what type of traffic it's getting although determining the quality of traffic can be difficult if not buying it from the owner.  Check the links for more information on buying expired domain names and choosing expired domain names.

One other area to keep in mind if you develop a site don't develop a site only you like.  Remember your trying to sell it and more than likely sell it to an end user.  So make sure you stay within the normal guidelines for websites, but you can learn more about that in the Developing Domains section.
