Buying Domains

So you've decided on your goals for your domain names, next you need to decide how you will buy the domains.  There are multiple ways to purchase the domain name that you want.  You can register it, buy it at auction, buy it directly from owner, buy in a forum, or solicit for it.  Each requires a slightly different approach to purchasing domain names.

New Domains - All new domains need to be registered (purchased) through a certified domain name registrar.  There are probably over 1000 registers at this time and that number keeps growing.  The registers than "register" the domain with the TLD (Top Level Domain) registrar who actually gives out the domains.  And no you can't buy a domain name straight from the registry.  For more information on domain registering check out the New Domains section and the Registering Domains section.

Domain Pricing - When purchasing both new domains from registrars and from other domainers pricing is one area where you can control whether it's an expensive hobby or a nice business.  Our Domain Pricing section goes into more detail on how to find the cheapest registrars and how pricing can really affect your purchases form other domainers.

Domain Appraisals - This is probably the number one scam in the domaining world, but not all of them are.  When you start getting into high value domains an appraisal may actually help and for tax purposes maybe required check out our Domain Appraisals section.

Where and How to Buy Domains from Domainers

Buying domains from other domainers can be a lucrative field if you have good networking skills, your organized, and most of all are a good judge on pricing.  There are lots of ways to acquire a domain name from a fellow domainer and we'll try to talk about the major ones.  Each takes a little different approach.

Domain Aftermarket - If a domain has been registered and is then put up for sale it's considered to be on the domain aftermarket.  There are lots of sites that work within this market including Sedo.com, Moniker.com, & Afternic.com.  We will talk about the different ways to use these sites and even how to join them in the Domain Aftermarket section.

Drop Catching Domains - Any domains that have been registered, but the owner fails to renew can be "drop catched".  Meaning you can use different services to pickup this domain from the registrar that the domain is with.  There are some major players in this arena, but also some great opportunities see the Drop Catching section for more information.

Domain Forums - The main domain forums can be a great place to pickup a domain at a good price.  Whether a domainer needs money for rent, develop a name, or a better opportunity there are some deals if your willing to take the time and look.  Check out our Domain Forums section for information on all the major forums.

Direct From Owner - There is always the option of buying a domain from someone who may not be specifically looking to sell it at that time.  There are lot's of ways to get the information you need to contact them and start the buying process.  Our Direct From Owner section talks about the different ways to get to a buyer and ways that people negotiate with the buyer.

How to Pay for Domains - If your using an domain aftermarket service you'll pay through them, but if your buying straight from the owner than there are a lot of different options.  Check out our How to Pay section for more details.

Escrow Services - Solid escrow service that works just like an escrow you would have for a house or professional retainer.  The escrow service will hold your money until the domain name who-is information is updated to yours and you own the domain.  Check out our Escrow Services section for more information.

Payment Services - These services will transfer money for you for a fee.  These include the well known paypal, netteller and various other services.  We'll give you some background on these services and some information for signing up in the Payment Services section.

Finally the Buying Domain Resources page will provide you with some tools and links to resources that will help you in the process.   Feel free to mention any Suggestions for this page or the web site as a whole.

It is very important to know your potential buyers. Keeping them updated with quality domains is just as important though. Knowing buyers with deep pockets really may not mean much if you are selling $3 domains. Selling before I buy happens all the time. But I always make sure that I have the transaction for the purchase atleast started with Escrow.com before I try to make a sale. I’ve done it on numerous occasions. And the funny part is that Escrow.com has that verification process at the end of each transaction.

And many times I have a domain sold, and the whois reflects my new buyer, but Escrow.com emails me since the whois is supposed to reflect me. So they always ask me to approve that I am agreeing to the transaction without being on the WHOIS. It is a funny scene, indeed.

An offer they can’t refuse. I look at their WHOIS. Find their address. Pay them a visit………hehe. Well, you can say I do something similar, only without the violence. To tell you the truth, many good domain sales can be found for sale on the forums. Especially domains with traffic and revenue, where the seller may have the domain un-optimized or at the wrong parking program where the domain doesn’t do well on. The key is finding these sellers or domains that are unfit for certain parking programs.

A few months ago I found a domain that was for sale with traffic and revenue on DNForum for 4k. It was for sale for 2 weeks and nobody bought it. I was thinking that it could be optimized and be worth much more. Well, after buying it I optimized it, and ended up selling for A LOT more than 4k. I’ll give the readers a hint, it was in the six figure range. Unfortunately, I cannot name the domain, otherwise if the seller finds out, he may be the one making me offers I can’t refuse and I’ll be the one signing contracts. No thank you!
